Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, performs more than 32,000 surgical procedures annually. With a main campus in New York City, HSS has facilities in New Jersey, Connecticut, and in the Long Island and Westchester County regions of New York State.

CHALLENGE

After implementing Epic’s suite of healthcare solution applications, HSS soon realized the burden imposed by their legacy applications, both in terms of the support resources and ongoing maintenance required. As both a hospital and a research-heavy institution, HSS places a significant value on legacy data beyond local and federal data retention requirements. Not only did they need a Legacy Data Archive (LDA) solution, but they also had unique needs around data management and the variety of its intended uses. However, HSS lacked the bandwidth to gather requirements, generate the Request for Proposal (RFP), and manage the selection process.

SOLUTION

CTG’s expertise in LDA and RFP processes allowed HSS resources to focus on Epic second-wave implementation and optimization tasks while we helped manage long-term plans for their legacy application data, including resolving issues related to overall data management and the use of the existing Epic data warehouse solution. The ultimate goal was to select an LDA solution through the RFP process. CTG provided the core project management and consulting expertise to develop the necessary data categorization matrix and data plan to define what data would be eligible for the LDA. By partnering with us for the selection process, HSS realized an estimated savings of $2 million.
