Closing the Gap Between Data and Decisions
Your data is spread across SharePoint, SQL, cloud storage, and various apps. The real challenge is turning it into quick, reliable insights before your business moves forward.
Many analysts spend hours each day searching for files, fixing data issues, and waiting for reports to update.
The Microsoft Fabric Analyst in a Day (FAIAD) workshop is built for hands-on problem-solvers. In just 8 hours, you'll create a modern data solution, starting from raw data and ending with interactive reports. You'll get practical guidance throughout, and by the end, you'll have a working solution you can actually use.
Is This for You?
This workshop is for Power BI users, advanced Excel analysts, and data coordinators who handle regular reports but feel held back by disconnected tools.
You don’t need to be a data engineer or know how to code. If you’re comfortable with Pivot Tables, Power BI relationships, or basic data cleaning, you’re ready for this workshop.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll move from making single reports to building a shared, scalable data setup your whole team can trust.
The Morning Session: Creating a Single Source of Truth with OneLake
Data is stored in many places and reliably accessing it can be tough. This often leads to duplicate files and version issues.
In the morning session, you’ll see how OneLake brings all your data together in one place, so you can work with it without having to move or copy files.
Key hands-on experiences include:
- Connecting multiple sources (SharePoint, SQL, cloud folders, and more) quickly by using Data Factory pipelines.
- You’ll use Shortcuts to connect directly to data wherever it’s stored, inside or outside your organization. This gives you instant access without making extra copies or adding costs.
- You’ll set up a Lakehouse that acts as a managed base for both engineering and analytics work.
- You’ll work with Data Wrangler, a visual tool that doesn’t require much coding, to automate cleaning and transforming your data. You can preview changes, reuse steps, and use AI features like summarization and data anomaly detection as you prepare.
- You’ll build a clean, reusable semantic model in the Lakehouse that supports your whole department, not just individual files.
- With DirectLake mode in Power BI, you get almost instant query speeds on large datasets, without needing to import everything or deal with slow live connections.
- Copilot helps with natural language tasks. You can ask it to create DAX measures, make report visuals, suggest SQL queries, or build simple transformation steps. It gives you clear, commented code you can check and adjust.
- Automated insights of surface patterns which you might miss during manual exploration.
- You’ll see automation tools that handle repetitive tasks or problem-solving steps, so you can spend more time on business logic instead of manual work.
- A complete end-to-end solution: Lakehouse with shortcuts, automated pipelines, cleaned data, a high-performance semantic model, and polished Power BI reports.
- You’ll get lab materials, sample datasets, reusable patterns, and a handy cheat sheet to help you roll out similar solutions at work. After the workshop, you’ll also have access to follow-up resources like a user group and an online Q&A forum. You can get advice, share experiences, and keep learning with support from instructors and peers, so you’re never on your own.
- After this workshop, you’ll have hands-on skills, a working prototype, and the confidence to become your team’s go-to person for data solutions.
You’ll also learn how Fabric’s security model lets you set detailed access controls across different tools, cutting down on the usual hassle of managing separate permissions.
The Afternoon Session: Turning Raw Data into Reliable, High-Performance Assets
Messy, inconsistent data still wastes a lot of time. Fixing it from step one every month isn’t practical.
Here’s what you’ll build in the afternoon:
The "Secret Sauce"
Microsoft has built Fabric with automation and smart features which you’ll get to use yourself. These tools are made to help you work faster and get questions to answer more quickly.
Innovative elements you’ll explore:
This toolkit becomes a reliable teammate, helping experienced analysts deliver more, faster, with better accuracy.
What You Walk Away With
At the end of the day, you’ll own a working prototype:
Many people use this build as a starting point for internal projects or to speed up their company’s move to a unified analytics platform. The prototype you create can be easily adjusted to connect with different data sources, whether they’re on-premises or in the cloud. You’ll also have options to adapt the security model to match your organization’s needs. This flexibility means you can customize the solution to your real-world situations, making your investment useful right away.
Lead the Shift Instead of Reacting to It
Microsoft Fabric brings data engineering and analytics together in one streamlined environment, making it easier to collaborate.
The FAIAD workshop is the quickest, most practical way to get started. It’s designed for technical professionals who want real, hands-on experience instead of just theory.
