CTG uses the STBoX™ methodology for software testing. The methodology encompasses three basic aspects of testing:
  • Process: Work breakdown structure of test activities (testing phases and their place
    in the software
    development process)

  • People: Organizational considerations, including test organization structure and models, testing roles, and tasks and responsibilities

  • Technology: Test infrastructure, including test environments, test data, office environments, and test tools.

STBoX is based on standards (including BS 7925-1, BS 7925-2, IEEE Std. 829-1998, and ISO 9126). used by ISEB and ISTQB in their certification programs. These standards have gained international recognition as best practices. However, they cover only some areas—such as terminology and deliverables—of software testing.

STBoX can be regarded as a ‘glue’ that fills gaps among the international standards. Intellectual and technological evolutions continue to advance rapidly, and new theories, techniques, and paradigms have changed the testing landscape. These different approaches and development methodologies have serious implications for the way you organize your test project. We realized this and updated our testing practices in step with these exciting changes. To that end, we created three different STBoX ‘flavors:’
  • STBoX Essentials contains all the core activities and steps that are crucial to the successful completion of a test project. Its workflow is restricted to six phases containing nine activities. STBoX Essentials has its own specific templates and examples, and is the flavor that will be further elaborated in this booklet.
  • STBoX Prime is the ‘classic’ STBoX flavor, the one that most will likely recognize. The workflow consists of seven phases, comprising a total of 23 activities. It differs from the first version of STBox (2006) in that work instructions have been further elaborated, templates and examples have been significantly revised, and new areas of information have been added.
  • STBoX Agile supports successful testing within an agile development environment. It fits seamlessly into an agile development methodology and helps testers overcome the specific challenges that are often associated with this methodology.

In addition to these content improvements, we have moved STBoX from a test methodology into a testing knowledge base. Along with process workflows, templates, and examples, the new version of STBoX features an entire knowledge database containing a complete glossary with ISTQB terminology and definitions. It has also become an exhaustive source of information on risk-based testing, test management, test budgeting, test design techniques, test environments, test data, and much more.
